Heroes of Might and Magic 3

All the following screenshots are using the HD mod at a resolution of 1920*1080.

HoMM 3

Heroes 3 is a fantasy turn based strategy game developed by New World Computing back in 1999. By most standards it is a cult classic on the PC platform and it holds a place close to my heart with many days spent as a young teenager playing this game on hotseat mode. Recently re-released on Steam as a HD version for around £15 but still available on GoG (with the expansions!) for less than £7.

TubeBox - YouTube iPhone App

In recent times with the introduction of iOS 6.0+ YouTube and music lovers had to give up the old native YouTube app for a slightly below par standard application. One of the great features the old app used to have was the ability to listen to a music video with the phone locked or the application minimised.

My house mate recently recommended an app called TubeBox which I bought from the Apple Store for £1.49 (I believe there is also a free version available). This fantastic app not only lets you play music videos in the background when the phone is locked or you are on another application but you can download and save videos to your iPhone to playback when you haven't got a internet connection.

So just to give a little demo and let you see it in action:

The above left photo is the metro interface-like main menu where you can access your saved videos, which can be ordered into different sections. Selecting the middle option at the bottom allows you to browse all of YouTube or if you sign into your YouTube account you can view your personal playlists, favourites and subscriptions (Right photo).

Its as simple as browsing a list of videos and selecting which one or more you want to download. Its worth noting that TubeBox by default will download by all videos in 720p ( or the highest available quality ).

OpenRA - Free remake of C&C Red Alert

Just bringing awareness to a fantastic remake of Red Alert, a real time strategy game from the mid-late 90's. This cross-platform remake contains most of the content from the original Red Alert and its two expansions. One of the big bonuses that is different is the modern and simple online capabilities which was non existent in the original.

Visit the OpenRA website here: http://openra.res0l.net/

The setup is very simple, just download and run the installer. When first launching the game, it will ask for content from the original game with the option to insert the original disk or just simply downloading a small (10MB) file.

Once you reach the main menu you have the choice to jump into online play via "Join Game". If you fancy just a single player mission or the classic skirmish hit the "Create Game" button.

Once you have chosen to create a game, simply just accept the default server configuration and then you will be presented with the lobby and the default map will be the first allied mission. To do a skirmish simply change map and select one of the conquest maps and add a AI in the lobby.
